Re: Alumni Scotland trip (as seen on Facebook)

I'm unlikely to get away before start of Feb unfortunately, so won't manage to make that one. Still on for March time, if everyone else is? If not, let's get the dates fixed one way or the other so other plans can be made. Fair play to them for getting it organised, hope it works out well. J Sent fr...

Re: Alumni Scotland trip (as seen on Facebook)

Nice one, Ryan. Yeah, splitting the fuel/hire fairly is the way to go, alright. Are we sorted for deciding where we want to go yet? I'm game for wherever has most reliable conditions that time of year. Will we start moving on this and farm out some of the organisation? Could get a couple of pints in...

Re: Alumni Scotland trip (as seen on Facebook)

Aye. those youngsters seem to have gotten very "sensitive" these days.. Will be a bit of craic on tour again. I'll get us the disclaimer forms done up, Steve, and we'll baptise a couple on the buttress routes on the ben ;-) In all seriousness I think it might be a good idea to overlap, and...

Re: Helmets

Before you two eejits head off (there's two of you now, no need for Steve), have a think about how yous are going to get off this sea stack without a rope...

Re: Helmets

Yes, Steve will be available for climbing excursions on a different tottering pile of sea-choss every weekend of the summer on the proviso that those going do not wear helmets. We're going to call it "accelerated learning". If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a rock. Fun times, boys a...

Re: Helmets

Steve, will you ever take our young bare-headed friend up to Donegal and show him how to climb piles of choss rising out of the ocean like a real climber. He'll maybe give you his old helmet to make into a hanging flower basket or something for you if you're nice to him. Will be great craic altogeth...

Re: Helmets

Don't you worry about the rocks landing on your head - get up there and climb it with Steve. Everyone knows that the rocks have a one in a million chance of actually hitting you. Have faith and just climb it! It'll be grand, I promise you!!

Re: Helmets

There are reasons you'd want to climb without one, to be honest - if it's hot and sweaty, if it's a particularly tenuous route where you have your cheek pressed against the rock, and you do feel a bit unencumbered without it the odd time. But... Have a look at Dave McLeod's video E11. You'll notice ...

Re: Helmets

You could maybe solo it as well in light of your newly liberated mind... It'll make you a better climber when you're run out. I promise.

Re: Helmets

I'd say you should ask Steve to go and do an bhuideal with you- it'll be a lovely day out and the worse that could happen is the top of your bare heads could get a bit sunburned. He'll be more than happy to oblige, I'm sure.

Re: Helmets

The newer QUB crop got very "sensitive" in recent years and complained if I'm not mistaken.

Retired my arse, I was actually at the climbing wall while you typed that! Vincent.

Re: Helmets

On second thoughts, I think you should go and climb a couple of sea stacks with Steve. Without a helmet. If you were a real climber you'd jump at the chance. Unless... You're chicken??

Re: Helmets

Furking yes!! RIOT!!!! Ahem.. Right, first off there's a big difference between sport climbing at a busy crag and the indoor wall. Evenly spaced, well maintained bolts, nobody knocking stuff down, no loose rock. Your comparison speaks volumes in itself. University club members (usually) don't have t...

Re: Helmets

Christ! This is like back in the olden days when we had to barricade ourselves in the Alumni section for the sake of common decency. This place is awfully quiet these days - we should start a riot in here for the craic and have the site admin come out with his e-truncheon like back in the day ;-)

Re: Helmets

Aye, Rick - I remember blood coming out of the top of my head and pouring down into my eye once after a cam popped out and bounced off my head - us old crusties were good at learning the lessons, alright! I once skied in to climb the cherie couloir, overnight in the hut and everything to make sure w...
